Biography

Dr Neto is an Italian-Brazilian with extensive experience and training as a Clinical Psychologist and PhD Psychology Researcher. Her main interest is the intersection of child education and child mental health, especially for the provision of Special Needs Education. Her work isunderpinned by child-centred principles. She completed her PhD in University College Dublin in the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the UCD School of Medicine in collaboration with UCD School of Psychology. Her PhD examined ADHD in children. Dr Neto has been sharing her clinical and research expertise in the training of Montessori teachers as a Psychology lecturer and Head of Research in St Nicholas Montessori College.

Dr Neto finished her BA in Psychology in 2007. In 2008, she started her training in Clinical Psychology in public mental health services as part of her postgraduate study in Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) in Brazil, a psychosocial clinical training programme with a psychoanalytic theoretical approach.

In 2009, she started her clinical psychology public practice as part of a multidisciplinary team in a mental health service. In 2012, she obtained her MA in Psychopathology and Mental Health from the University of São Paulo in Brazil and she completed an internship training at “School of the Bridge” in Vila das Aves, Portugal, a primary public school with an educational philosophy based on the “pedagogy of freedom”of Paulo Freire. In 2013, she had her training in Italy atIter& Il Ponte social cooperative offering psychological support for young people and adults with learning disabilities and autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

She conducted her PhD in UCD from 2014 to 2018 researching on ADHD assessment and treatment. As a PhD candidate in UCD School of Medicine, she was part of the “ADHD research team” leaded by Prof Fiona McNicholas. During her PhD, she supervised UCD medical students to develop research projects and lectured on child development and child mental health. She also lectured to M.Sc. Health Policy and Managements at Trinity College. After submitting her PhD thesis, she started lecturing in Psychology and Research Methods in St Nicholas Montessori College. She has also been working as a private clinical psychologist and psychotherapist in Dublin, providing psychoanalytic psychotherapy for young people and adults.

Research

Dr Neto conducts studies exploring the intersection between education and mental health care. She completed her PhD degree in the UCD School of Medicine in collaboration with UCD School of Psychology. Dr Neto PhD thesis was a grounded theory research on the perspective of clinicians (paediatricians and child psychiatrists) and service users (children and adolescents with ADHD and their parents) of ADHD assessment and treatment in Ireland and Brazil. Her PhD thesis was a qualitative investigation of the perspectives of children, clinicians and parents on the key challenges facing young people with ADHD in the school context in Ireland and Brazil. Dr Neto findings were that school behaviour is the key problematic for the constellation of stakeholders, with a major concern being the power balance among parents (mothers), school personnel and clinicians. Therefore, Neto’sPhD researchis being currently replicated together with her colleague Saragh Ward, an expert in special needs,to include the SMSI school teacher’s perspective on playful learning for supporting children with special educational needs such as ADHD. Dr Neto is also involved in conducting a survey on student’s mental wellbeing with SMSI Learner Support Officer Audrey Johnston.
