Description | This module supports learners in the development of a professional identity through the introduction of a range of practical and professional skills and attitudes relevant to possible future study and work in the field of psychology. The module stresses the importance of professional teamwork and the legal, ethical and regulatory issues related to the profession.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills: – Introduction to the types of interpersonal skills such as empathy, leadership, listening, negotiation, teamwork – Listening, Stages of listening, Obstacles of Listening, Emphatic Listening, Active listening, Building trust ad establishing rapport, Listen and Interpretation of language, Non– judgmental interpretation; Non–Verbal communication cues; Listeners in Control and Traps for Listeners. Ethical Practice: – Respect; competence; responsibility; integrity; Regulatory and Professional Bodies: – Health and Social Care Professional Act 2005 – The Psychological Society of Ireland – Pending regulatory Bodies/ CORU Register Introduction to Supervision in Practice: – Supervision, theory, skills and process – Context of supervision – The reflective practitioner – Peer and group supervision – Development of skills in relation to feedback, evaluation and report-writing Self-regulation skills: – Behavioural self-regulation, emotional self-regulation, cognitive self-regulation; – Adaptability; Problem-Solving Strategies; -Conflict resolution Emotion control: – Optimism and resilience to keep negative emotions at bay while dealing with challenging situations; difficult service scenarios; respond to difficult chronic and serious cases; emotional intelligence.
